Is Your Makeup Safe to Use?
Dirty Makeup

Be honest with yourself: when is the last time you checked the expiration dates on your makeup? Hopefully your answer is ‘within the last month’, especially if you’re a makeup artist. Old cosmetics break down over time and will harden or clump inside their containers. In the worst case scenarios, expired makeup can lead to breakouts and infections. To avoid these makeup mishaps, here are some easy ways to keep your cosmetics fresh and safe.

EXPIRATION DATES AND PAO

Makeup expiration dates

Checking the expiration dates on your makeup isn’t always easy. While some products will have an exact expiration date that lets you know when to toss it, regardless of whether it’s been used, most products will not. Instead, you will most likely find a PAO or Period After Opening expiration date. These labels (measured in months after opening) tell you how long your product stays fresh and safe to use, typically ranging from three months to two years. While liquids—like mascaras and eye liners—can expire in as little as three months, powders and lip products can last up to a year or more. For a full breakdown on products, check the guide below!

TOSS CLUMPY, SMELLY MAKEUP

cosmetics-2116386_1280.jpg

If you can’t remember exactly when you first opened your product, the next best thing to do is trust your senses. If your makeup smells “off” or different than normal, throw it out. Check to see if your products are crusty, hardened, or clumping—those are all signs that your makeup is past the point of no return. Give special consideration to any products you take or use in hot or steamy weather, as those conditions can break down your makeup and store bacteria.

Sanitize, Sanitize, Sanitize

Even if your makeup is relatively new, it’s always a good idea to sanitize before each use. In the same way that we clean our brushes to keep them germ-free, it’s important to keep your makeup products sanitized as well. Misting sprays, like First Sanitizer, kill lingering bacteria on contact and keep your makeup safe for application. Sterile products and tools prevent breakouts and infections, and is the industry standard for professional artists. Check out more products below to keep your sanitation game on point!

The Makeup Bride Guide
Make Up First Bridal Tips

The business of bridal is the business of confidence! As a makeup artist, it is your job to make sure that the bride feels beautiful on her special day. In spite of the constant cycle of new trends, it is important to remember to keep looks classic and flattering, but also current. Always choose and apply makeup that is suitable for photos and videos, all of which will be shot in high definition. Check out artist Jill Glaser’s guidelines below to keep your bride happy and stress-free!

  • Bridal makeup is a hybrid of both straight-up beauty and media. Be mindful of color selection, highlight/contour, and blending.

  • Anticipate your bride’s needs. Although you may prefer the traditional bridal looks, your bride may want something else—make her happy! Looks include: Classic, Retro, Current Trend, and combination of current and classic looks.

  • Whatever look the bride selects, clean, flawless makeup is key.

  • For flawless skin, most brides believe there is nothing better than airbrush makeup.  DON’T DISAGREE WITH YOUR BRIDE!  Learn how to airbrush and invest in the equipment and products! Remember, you need to spend money to make money, and with one or two large bridal bookings your investment will be recouped.

    The benefits of airbrush makeup:

    a. Very quick application

b. Good for HD film/video and high resolution prints

c. Durable and long-lasting

d. Different, and perhaps less, face prep products and time

e. Easy reapplication

f. Excellent for camouflaging skin imperfections, including tattoos

g. Additional charge may be imposed for airbrush application

*Types of airbrush foundation for beauty applications: Water, Silicone, Water with added Silicone, Alcohol

  • Remember: your primary goal as a bridal makeup artist is to make the bride look and feel beautiful and confident in her beauty!

For more tips on achieving the perfect bridal looks, check out the workshops below!

WE CARE! AVOID CROSS-CONTAMINATION!

Brushes, beauty blenders, sponges, tools, and cosmetics are a potential, realistic breeding ground for fungus and bacteria. BEWARE! If left uncleaned, said brushes, sponges and tools may cause breakouts, irritation, and in the worst case scenario, infections!

Keeping your client happy and healthy is easy—check out our cleaning recommendations below!

BRUSHES

Clean your brushes. No excuses. Not only does regular and thorough brush cleaning prevent bacterial infections, it also helps extend the life of your brushes! Be good to your brushes and they will be good to you! Cinema Secrets has the perfect setup for cleaning your brushes, both between clients and at the end of the day. Their brush cleaner is a quick-drying formula that works great on both natural and synthetic brushes, and the cleansing tin serves as the perfect mini cleaning station.

COSMETICS

Professional, sanitary makeup artists clean their cosmetics before after each use; it’s a practice everyone else should adopt as well. Solutions of at least 70% isopropyl alcohol should be used to effectively kill bacteria on contact for all cosmetics, including cream palettes, lipsticks, and powders. Our popular misting spray, First Sanitizer, makes it easy to quickly sanitize all of your cosmetics before and after each application.

DEEP CLEANING

Gunk happens. It’s inevitable. Sometimes a product will build up on your brush, and a quick clean won’t do the trick. It’s important to have deep cleaning tools at your disposal. Heavy duty cleaning tools, such as Sigma’s Spa Brush Cleaning Glove have several different cleaning textures to help you strip away build-up from any of your brushes. The resilient, reinforced silicone textures are made to withstand hundreds of cleanings without wearing down or collecting bacteria. Pair with beautyblender’s blendercleanser solid pro soap for deep cleaning of both brushes and Beauty Blender sponges!

DISPOSABLES

When all else fails, use disposable applicators and sponges! It is inexcusable for the pro makeup artist to use the same mascara on different people. For non-pros, mascara wands can clump, beauty blenders and other sponges wear down after heavy usage—but single use products are designed to be fresh, effective, and safe every single time. Remember, every new coat of makeup should have a new applicator-no double-dipping and you will avoid cross- contamination.

Spring Statement Trends

NEON LIP

Instagram: @monaleannemakeup

Instagram: @monaleannemakeup

Vibrant lip colors can emphasize your look, even without much else on your face. Choosing a strong neon color is tone-setting statement look that anyone can use to break up their makeup monotony. Orange, Coral, Hot Pink, and Fuchsia have been popping up all over runways this spring, so don’t hesitate to add these bold colors to your collection.

Statement Lids & Inner Eye Color

Instagram: @namvo

Instagram: @namvo

Pastel colors are taking over! Grab a pink, purple, or blue and decorate your lids with emphasis. Customize your look with whatever you feel comfortable doing: defined lines, hazy edges, or completely circle the eye with color. If you’re feeling intimidated, start with tiny pops of color on the inner lid using a precision brush. Get creative!

Monochromatic Makeup

Instagram: @namvo

Instagram: @namvo

Monochromatic makeup is here to stay. Instead of piecing together a complex look of complimentary colors, stick to just one or two matching shades and accent the eyes, cheeks, and lips. Peaches, pastels, and soft tans bring dimension to the face without overcomplicating things. Opt for multipurpose products that you can use on different areas of your face.

WARM BRONZER

Instagram: @kilprity

Instagram: @kilprity

Ditch the heavy highlights and go for the newly-tanned warmth of a subtle bronzer. Rose gold and champagne are dominating the bronzer game right now, giving face illuminators their time to shine. Apply and blend to the apples of your cheeks for an instant glow that will give you the perfect sun-kissed look.

BECCA- Shimmering Skin Perfector Liquid

Achieve effortless dewy radiance with this lustrous liquid highlighter that perfects the skin with light-reflecting pearls for a dewy, natural-looking finish. This highlighter features a sophisticated prismatic effect that adjusts in any light to impart a soft focus, healthy-looking glow.
